7.11.16

Today was my first day at Camp Sunshine and I have to admit, I was very nervous. The schedule is from 9-3:30 but I came early so that I could get adjusted, but there were still so many people there that it was a little nerve wracking and overwhelming. I was given one of the older girls. There are four groups: older girls, older boys, little kids and middle kids. The older boys and girls are grouped together and the little and middle kids are grouped together.

Since it was my first day, I was given a girl who was verbal and was able to walk properly. Her name was Ju*, and she is 18 years old. I wasn't told what her disability was but from what I can tell it was a mental deficit. She reminded me a lot of my younger sister and she was a lot of fun. She is very sweet and I think she has been going there for a few years now because she knew all of the counselors, volunteers and other campers. She liked to call people babe, and as the day went on and she got more comfortable with me, she started calling me that too which made me happy. I was with two other volunteers, which is nice because it makes the experience less intimidating since you're not the only person working with the camper.

Overall, it was a great first day and I am very excited for tomorrow.
