7.15.16

7.15.16

I was originally planning on taking Fridays off, just so that I could do my own thing with my friends for the day, but I loved the camp so much that I decided to come. I had Jo*, who is the cutest little girl. She is nonverbal and eats through a feeding tube. She was very tired and slept throughout the whole day when she was in her stroller, and even when we went into the pool in the morning and afternoon. It was a very peaceful and relaxing day and she was just the sweetest little girl.

Today I went to a shelter in Paterson called Oasis to volunteer. It is known as a "safe haven for women and children", and provides them with educational services, and takes care of young children. I was assigned to the second-grade boys and there were 6 of them. They were all very energetic, and had so much love which was so inspiring to see. It was a little hectic at times but for the most part they did what was asked of them and were very happy. I made a quick connnection with one of the boys and he would always try to be near me, or would ask me to play with him and that made me so happy and I was honored.

Today I walked in and it was so crowded. There were a total of 70 volunteers with around 20 campers, so there were groups of three and four volunteers per camper. I had S* today who is an older, nonverbal girl, with a visual and mental impairment. It was different working with S then it was with J because there was no verbal communication like I was used to with every other person in my life. But I really enjoyed my day with S. She is 26, and she loves boys so she spent a large part of our day walking over to all of the male volunteers and staff members. It was so funny and I really enjoyed working with her.

7.11.16

Today was my first day at Camp Sunshine and I have to admit, I was very nervous. The schedule is from 9-3:30 but I came early so that I could get adjusted, but there were still so many people there that it was a little nerve wracking and overwhelming. I was given one of the older girls. There are four groups: older girls, older boys, little kids and middle kids. The older boys and girls are grouped together and the little and middle kids are grouped together.

Since it was my first day, I was given a girl who was verbal and was able to walk properly. Her name was Ju*, and she is 18 years old. I wasn't told what her disability was but from what I can tell it was a mental deficit. She reminded me a lot of my younger sister and she was a lot of fun. She is very sweet and I think she has been going there for a few years now because she knew all of the counselors, volunteers and other campers. She liked to call people babe, and as the day went on and she got more comfortable with me, she started calling me that too which made me happy. I was with two other volunteers, which is nice because it makes the experience less intimidating since you're not the only person working with the camper.

Overall, it was a great first day and I am very excited for tomorrow.
